Saqlain Abbas is from Pakistan. Although he had obtained a bachelor's degree and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from a top engineering university in Pakistan, his desire for knowledge drove him to continue his research .Pursued by Jiaotong University in the field of "mechanical systems and vibration" and its achievements, he traveled thousands of miles to study at Jiaotong University. Faced with the high-level academic requirements of Jiaotong University, he never shrunk back and finally successfully published many high-quality academic papers. After three years of studying abroad in Shanghai Jiaotong University, he realized his scientific research dream.
Shanghai Jiaotong University, the most correct decision
Saqlain Abbas learned that , Chinese professors and researchers had made great contributions in the field of research with innovative ideas and excellent practical knowledge. Moreover, China has a large number of international students, and China can give excellent international students sufficient funding. As the world's second largest economy, China can provide more development opportunities and jobs. Not to mention that China and Pakistan are "good brothers." Later, he saw Jiaotong University in the QS and Times Higher Education rankings, and his major is also an advantageous discipline of Jiaotong University. Therefore, with very strong scientific research capabilities,Shanghai Jiaotong University is a perfect choice for him.
Perseverance and ingenuity determine success
During the three years of scientific research life, Saqlain Abbas worked with his laboratory partners and helped each other. He took part in every group discussion, which left a profound impact on the students in the research group. One of his favorite courses is "Academic Writing". During the course, he communicated with the professor Manuel Charlemagne many times and mastered a lot of skills in writing papers, which made the tutor fully affirmed his thesis writing ability. With his continuous breakthroughs in the subject, his tutor also recommended him to attend the “12th International Workshop on Structure Health Monitoring, California, USA, 2019”. He seized this opportunity and conducted in-depth discussions with other participants. With such a serious working attitude, Saqlain Abbas also served as a permanent member of the 2017-2019 International Student Union (ISU-SJTU) and (MEISU). As a regular member, he not only organized some cultural and academic activities, but also actively participated in it, and finally won several honorary certificates from the community. At the same time, he participated in the Hult Prize competition as the team leader on December 9, 2017 and achieved good results. In addition, he actively participates in sports activities out of scientific research, and has also obtained the Certificate of Excellence for International Sports Events organized by ISU-SJTU in May 2017.
Faced with the new environment, he did not flinch, but kept trying new things. From the first year of adapting to later, he was able to make breakthroughs. In the past three years of scientific research life, every bit of his daily life reflects his rigorous learning attitude. He had gained a lot in the past three years.
Cultural collision and fascination of China
When he first came to China, Saqlain Abbas was deeply fascinated by the culture of Shanghai. The dazzling high-rise buildings and rich culture in the city seemed to attract him to stay and work in Shanghai. At the same time, he also realized that China is not short of labor,so he is facing huge competition and language difficulties. Fortunately, Shanghai Jiaotong University provided him with a good platform, which not only improved his professional skills, but also improved his social skills, which allowed him to broaden his horizons and have more choices.
Saqlain Abbas is very grateful for the three years of studying abroad and hopes to try his best to convey everything he has learned during his studies in China to the Pakistani people.
Personal Performance
Muhammad Saqlain Abbas’s PhD research work is related to “Fault detection in Mechanical Systems under Vibration”. During his PhD, he has completed five papers as first author including four Journal (SCI) papers and one conference paper that he represented in “12th International Workshop on Structure Health Monitoring, California, USA, 2019”. Further, working as team member in his lab group, he have also contributed in seven SCI journal papers as a co-author. Based on his research performance, he have been awarded the certificate of “2020 Excellent Graduates (International Students)”.
