Marcus Geimer received his Diploma degree in mechanical engineering from the RWTH Aachen University, Aachen, Germany in 1990. In 1995, he received his Ph.D. from the Institute of Hydraulics and Pneumatics, today named Institute for Fluid Power Drives and Systems, RWTH Aachen University. He started his industrial career in 1995 in the field of construction at the company Krupp Berco Bautechnik GmbH, Essen (Germany). There, he was the leader of the research group for hydraulic breakers. In 2000, he changed to Bucher Hydraulics Gmbh, Klettgau (Germany), where he led the construction and customer development for mobile hydraulics.

Since 2005, he has been a full professor and director at the Institute of Mobile Machines (Mobima), at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), Germany. The institute focuses on hydraulic and electric drives for traction and working functions, as well as control systems for optimizing machines and working processes, incorporating machine learning technologies.

Abstract

Today’s challenges often have similar drivers: megatrends. They are defined by a duration of several decades, can be seen globally and have an impact on all areas of society. Examples of megatrends are the global warming, which leads to a climate change, an increase of population, which needs more food and living space, and digitalisation. Research activities are driven to meet these challenges and show possible solutions. How can research solutions contribute increasing the efficiency of mobile machines and developing eco-friendly solutions? How reliable are machine learning methods? The speech tries to give answers by showing research activities and discussing their results.
