From May 13 to 16, the School of Mechanical Engineering offered a training workshop entitled “The Craft of Academic Writing and Presentations in Engineering Research”. The training has invited Kathryn Kirsch, Katie Ciccaglione and Mimi Overbaugh as guest speaker. Three of them are members of Prof. Michael Alley’s team from Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering at Pennsylvania State University. Nearly 50 graduate students participated in this program.
Prof. XI Lifeng, dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering, met with the abovementioned three guest speakers and extended his warm welcome. He noted that the School of Mechanical Engineering has always been dedicated to creating an open environment for students to broaden their international vision. Furthermore, he also put forward that it is his willingness to have more opportunities for future exchange and cooperation affairs.
During the training period, Kathryn, Katie and Mimi take it in turns to explain the process of presenting academic lectures, writing essays and contribution, etc. By emphasizing the purpose of academic lectures, those three lectors noted some points worthy of attention when we use slides to present our ideas. A warm response was called out among students in the training course. They are quite interested in what they heard, and actively asked questions to the speakers throughout the communication and interaction part. After the workshop, these distinguished speakers answered questions from audience on writing and presentation one by one, thus giving students a better understanding on what they have learned in this training program.
With great patient, the deep knowledge of writing and presentations in engineering research has won the three instructors praise from all students who participated in the activity. All trainees involved in this workshop have been awarded a course certification and considered the training course as a rewarding one.
This is the third time for ME to provide training course on academic writing and presentations in engineering research. Through such kind of activities, the communication channel among the home university and its counterparts abroad have been updated. Meanwhile, students saw their capacity of writing and presentation in engineering research improved and interpersonal skills across culture enhanced. At the same time, they were also equipped with a broader international vision.
