The unveiling ceremony of SJTU-NTNU Research Center in Sustainable Energy was held in Sino-Italian Green Energy Building on the afternoon of June 4, which was attended by Torbj鴕n Digernes, Rector of Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Zhang Jie, SJTU President, and Huang Zhen, SJTU Vice President, Tao Yanmin, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Mechanical Engineering (ME), Xi Lifeng, Executive Dean of ME and Wang Ruzhu, Director of Institute of Refrigeration and Cryogenics. Professor Wang chaired the unveiling ceremony.
President Zhang, on behalf of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, expressed his congratulations to the inauguration of the Center. President Zhang reckons that SJTU and NTNU, as universities enjoy world-wide reputation, have established friendship ties through faculty and students exchange as well as research collaboration in the past few years. He stressed that great achievements have been made after the signing of Sustainable Energy R&D Agreement this May. President Zhang hoped the two universities will further strengthen the collaborative ties and make joint effort to striving for academic excellency.
President Digernes said that it was his great honor to set up collaborative relations with SJTU and he stated that a lot of long-term plans on research and education needed to be achieved between universities. The establishment of the Center was regarded as a milestone of the two universities partnership history.
Afterwards, Zhang Jie and Torbj鴕n Digernes signed the cooperation agreement and unveiled the Center. It is said the Center will conduct joint tackling of key problems in energy technology in green building, GHG mitigation technology, LNG technology and other fields. It will strive to be a world leading research center in sustainable energy. In the future, the bilateral cooperation will be expanded to educational programs.
NTNU was founded in 1910 and has contributed a solid century of academic achievements and discoveries that have shaped Norwegian society. Its 53 departments are spread out over seven major campuses, and graduate about 3,300 students every year, two-thirds of which are master's or PhD candidates. The university has more than 100 laboratory facilities distributed among the different faculties and departments. These are central elements in NTNU's education and research work. NTNU research is cutting edge, and many of the technological and cultural innovations that allow Norway to extract oil from the North Sea, grow healthy salmon in fish farms , or interpret the country's 9,000 years of human history have been developed here.
