ME delegation composed of Prof. Lifeng Xi, Prof. Chaohui Du, Prof. Jingyi Wu and Prof. Feng Gao visited University of California, Berkeley (UCB), University of Michigan (UM) and Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) during Feb. 5-11, 2012 and carried out faculty recruitment activities respectively in these three universities. 
      
Prof. Lifeng Xi introduced position requirements, conditions of scientific research as well as salary package to Ph.D students and postdocs participated in. Professors from ME held face-to-face communication with attendees and gave answers and instructions to the questions and doubts raised by students. Many students expressed their willingness to apply for faculty position in ME; some of them handed in their CVs on site hoping to receive reply from ME soon. Recruiting activities were successful and productive, through which students overseas get more familiar with ME’s progress in international collaboration and research capability. 
 

Delegation members communicated with Prof. David Dornfeld, Chair of The Mechanical Engineering Department of UCB, Prof. Nadine Aubry, Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at CMU and professors of similar research interests on potential collaborative research areas. Delegations also paid visits to laboratories. Prof. Homayoon Kazerooni from The Mechanical Engineering Department at University of California, Berkeley plotted out the idea for establishing joint lab between SJTU and UCB. Meanwhile, CMB hoped to develop cooperation on energy.

In UM, delegation members held talks with Prof. Jun Ni, Prof. Greg Hulbert, Prof. Albert Shih and Prof. Claus Borgnakke, Associate Chair for Undergraduate Education on regulating curriculum and Ph.D qualifying exam. In UCB and CMU, the two universities expressed that bilateral ties with our school should be further enhanced and cooperation agreement is expected to signed by counterparts. CMU President Jared L. Cohon met with ME delegation and reached a mutual understanding on teaching and research coolaboration.
