Prof. Weikang JIANG, from the Institute of Vibration, Shock and Noise, School of Mechanical Engineering, served as visiting professor in University of Southampton (UoS) from June 26, 2011 to July 26, 2011.
At the invitation of UoS Department of Engineering and the Environment, supported by Distinguished Visiting Fellowship Scheme under The Royal Academy of Engineering, Prof. Jiang’s one-month visiting was to carry out a research study on underwater noises analysis and reduction.
In UoS, Prof. Jiang gave three seminars: i) the introduction on research and education in IVSN, SJTU and the methodology for locating the dominant acoustic source and their transfer path in engineering as well as the visualization of noise source and propagation; ii) research plan and initial progress on piling system noises; iii) techniques for vibration and noise reduction of structures with numerical simulations.
Moreover, Prof. Jiang was invited to visit the centre of vibration and control at University of Liverpool for two days. A seminar on sound field analysis and measurement was given. He also visited Lloyd’s Register, London, to give a lecture on Visualisation of sound field with applications and to discuss possible development on reduction of underwater noises caused by marine structures.
What’s more, Prof. Jiang spent four days in the 9th International Conference on Damage Assessment of Structures, 10 - 14 July 2011, St. Anne's College, University of Oxford to give an invited presentation on Research on Diagnosing the Gearbox Faults based on Near Field Acoustic Holography. This joint paper has been published in the conference proceedings.
Furthermore, possible collaboration on research has been discovered between UK’s universities and companies with SJTU and further exchange on student/faculty are worth of expecting.
