Screw Theory-based Methods Summer School
Posted by:     Time:2010-08-22

The 2nd International Summer School on Screw theory-based Methods in Robotics was held successfully in School of Mechanical Engineering during July 26 and Aug 6, 2010. Seven experts on Screw Theory and Robotics were invited as summer school teachers, including Professor Harvey Lipkin from Georgia Institute of Technology, Professor Jon Selig from South Bank University, Dr. X. Kong from Heriot-Watt University, Professor Roy Featherstone from Australian National University, Dr. Matteo Zoppi from University of Genova, Dr. Dimiter Zlatanov from University of Genova and Professor Feng GAO from ME-SJTU.

Over 30 students enrolled in summer school were univesity professors, NASA engineers as well as postgraduates, who were from U.S.A, Germany, France, Spain, Greece, Italy, Canada, Poland, Slovakia, Israel, Pakistan and China.

Screw theory-based Methods hold its broad application prospects in engineering area, especially for the research and application in the area of Robotics and Mechanism. It is a pity that Screw theory-based Methods are seldom taught in universities worldwide. Thus, researchers and students have little acquitance with it. Held for the first time in Italy in 2009, the summer school being served as a channel for postgraduates and researchers to learn foundation of Screw theory-based Methods and therefore, to promote engineering application of this method. The teachers gave excellent lessons and instructions and they also combine teaching with their newest achievements in scientific research.

During the summer school, various activities were arranged, for instance, lab visits, expo visiting as well as Pujiang sight-seeing, which left deep impression on students of different nationalities. Students not only listened to lectures given by top-notch experts and receive direct instruction from these first-class professors, attendees from different countries and majors got to know each other well.

On the closing ceremony of summer school, Professor GAO Feng awarded lesson certificate to each student. Professor GUO Weizhong from ME-SJTU delivered remarks expressing sincere gratitude to the seven outstanding experts as well as students worldwide. The 2nd International Summer School on Screw theory-based Methods in Robotics fell its curtain to the loud applause of teachers and students.
