Postdoctoral Position:
Atomistic Modeling of Materials for Li-air Batteries
 University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
 Posted July 2, 2010

A postdoctoral position in the area of atomistic modeling of materials for Li-air batteries is available immediately in the group of Prof. Don Siegel at the University of Michigan. The project will involve application of atomistic and/or electronic structure methods to model the morphology, thermodynamics, and kinetics of Li-air battery materials, and to screen for new cathode catalyst compositions with potential to exhibit improved performance.

The project is a collaboration between UM and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU). Computational modeling at UM will be coordinated with experiments performed in the groups of Profs. Zi-feng Ma and Xianxia Yuan in the Chemical Engineering Department at SJTU. To ensure tight coupling of the computational and experimental efforts, at least one trip to Shanghai is anticipated each year.

Experience with simulation methods such as Density Functional Theory or semi-empirical molecular dynamics is required. A background in materials chemistry, electrochemistry, transition state theory, or catalysis/surface science is preferred, but not required. Applicants should be willing to work closely with experimentalists at SJTU and to participate in the mentoring of graduate and undergraduate students.

The University of Michigan is located in Ann Arbor, a quintessential college town that is routinely ranked amongst the country’s best places to live:
